Swiss Winter Deals not Exclusively for Sport

Alpine skiing is undoubtedly the main goal of Czechs travelling to Switzerland. However, there is much more on offer. We introduce 5 winter tips to guarantee you a varied and unforgettable holiday.

1. Davos Klosters

A destination known by everyone – whether for the World Economic Forum, which is traditionally hosted here, or because the area is the favourite ski destination of the British Royal Family and also the venue of the famous Spengler Cup hockey tournament, in which Sparta Prague last shone, making it to the final and losing to the home team only in shootouts. Most importantly, however, Davos Klosters is a winter sports mecca for skiers and snowboarders, and for bikers in summer. At the same time, Davos is also the highest-situated town in Europe, boasting everything provided by the urban atmosphere – bars, discos, museums and galleries. And it has one more attraction in the form of a great schedule for visitors, who can choose from several special daily programmes, which for a minimal registration fee will allow them a closer a closer look into the secrets of local life or to try out new, as yet unexplored sports. The final trump card is the easy transport accessibility – it takes less than 7 hours by car from Prague, or it is possible to arrive by direct night train, which leaves Prague daily after 18:00, stops in České Budějovice, and arrives in time for the early morning's cleared snow.

2. Schilthorn in the Jungfrau Region

Participants of the traditional men's downhill race – the Lauberhorn – also praised the uniqueness of the scenery of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains and voted it as the most beautiful in the entire World Cup. By the way, you can personally follow the route of the legendary race with a timer, but don't even try to compete with the winners! The Ski Pass in this area also includes the Schilthorn – a peak from which a literally breathtaking view of the magical trio of mountains is offered. The revolving Piz Gloria restaurant was featured in the Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", where James Bond himself often skied. A small interactive museum under the restaurant is dedicated to the film, and the local toilets are also stylish!

3. Lower Engadin

The charming valley of the Inn River fascinates cross-country skiers in particular, to whom it provides endless enjoyment on trails of all difficulties for both classic and skate skiing. After all, the famous Engadin Ski Marathon is also held here. And the Val Müstair valley also gave birth to the Swiss cross-country skiing champions from the Cologno family.

4. Aletsch Arena

The uniqueness of the Aletsch Glacier is also confirmed by the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, on which the entire Aletsch Bietschhorn Jungfrau area is included. Its length of 20 km makes it the highest point in the Alps. Above it is the Aletsch Arena ski area, which will be especially appreciated by lovers of relaxation, sun and beautiful views. The whole area is car-free and offers plenty of apartments popular among Czechs.  The 4 000-metre Valais peaks provide a panoramic vista for visitors. A romantic walk can be taken here, for example, on snowshoes.

5. Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

The famous Swiss panoramic trains can be enjoyed even in winter. Ride the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt, or the magical Bernina Express literally from glaciers to palm trees. The contrasts here are especially impressive in March, when passengers leave the winter environment of St. Moritz and travel through the Poschiavo Valley, where spring is already  blossoming, to Tirana in Italy. Right in the centre of Switzerland, train passengers follow the route of the oldest European cogwheel to the top of the Queen of the Mountains – the Rigi. Trains travel here annually, and the journey can be enhanced by a cruise on Lake Lucerne with Raclette or Fondue served on board.
